All right, let's go. So welcome to the podcast, Holly. Thank you so much, Jen. I'm really excited to be. I am excited because first, when you put in, I always ask my guests to say, what title do you want? This podcast to be, and your title was The boldest title I have ever had, , and it was, wealth is for Everyone.
So this is one of my favorite topics because it's one that I've struggled with and I know that working with people in my business, it seems to be the topic that comes up the most is money. So, mm, I'm so excited to know all the things, but I gotta know, how did you get started in this field? I started teaching personal finance as a passion project when I was only 26 years old.
I had just bought my first house, and I had found that experience to be really empowering for me because, My, my good friend moved in with me and she paid super cheap rent, so it was good for her. And then that was helping me pay my mortgage. So it was good for me, and I'm thinking, gosh, why aren't more of my friends doing this?
And I really didn't know. I didn't know the answer to the question, so I asked, and I found a couple of things. Number one, Money is a very taboo subject. Like people a lot of people don't wanna talk about it or afraid to talk about it. So I think that's the first thing is that for some reason we don't talk about money in our culture and a confused mind says no.
So you know, because we're not talking about it, we're not making money moves. So that's number one. And number two is we don't teach financial education in school, which I find so interesting because the whole point of school is to prepare us to. workers? Well, I mean, I could go on and on about what curriculum is teaching and not teaching, but ultimately we're getting, we're being prepared to get a job and the point of a job is to earn money.
And from my perspective, and this was definitely my experience, What we do with our paycheck, at least for me, is to live a full wonderful and fulfilling life of purpose. And when I learned that my experience growing up in a family where we talked about money, at the dinner table was different than my friends is when I realized, oh, okay.
Not everyone has the financial education that I received in my home. And so at the time, I was a member of Rotary International and had been for many years, and they had supported me so much in my life sending me abroad, et cetera. That I thought I think it's time for me to give back.
I'm gonna create a service project where I teach young adults about money before they graduate and get into the real world and start making money mistakes, which I, which you know, it happens if you're not educated. We make the mistakes and then we have to spend years on undoing them. It's like, well, why not?
Get the education first. Get started on the right foot. And so that's how it started. Just a little project at local high schools. And after a few years, I, I. Teachers and parents of my students asking if they could sit in on my workshop. And that's again, I had another aha moment. I realized, oh, it's not just young adults who wanna learn about money.
It's everyone, like everyone is thirsty for financial education. Long story short, In 2012, I started my first like little baby company. It was called Fundamental Finance Academy. And I would teach workshops and programs to individuals and couples alongside my full-time job. And then in 2016, I became a full-time financial co coach with my company now Financial Impact.
That is amazing. And as you're sitting there talking about education, I had just had this conversation and I was like, because I came out of finance. So before I moved in, I was in finance and I was like, why did they not even like how to balance at the time a checkbook because I grew up pre having, getting to do it on your computer and we don't get any of that education.
So how cool that you turn that passion project and from that you kept seeing the hole in the market. And that's how this all came about. And I think that's really. , if we allow ourselves to face the taboo topics, that's how there will be change in the world. Preach, sister. It is so true. Not only do we connect more deeply when we talk, when we open our hearts and share what's inside of them, but this is how we get ideas and this is how we grow, is by talking with others about their experience and learning.
Oh, I'm not alone. And my I find that the people that I'm working. that my coaching clients have one or a combination of these three emotions when it comes to money, it's confusion, it's shame, or it's overwhelm and that's not fun. Who wants to live with that? And it's insidious because I've felt financial stress my journey to wealth has not been perfect by any means.
I don't think there is such a thing as perfection when it comes to money. I think there's just doing your best. life is always an ebb and a flow. Like it's always an expansion and a contraction. And I started my journey to wealth with $67,000 of credit card debt when I was living paycheck to paycheck.
And I will tell you what, that was stressful. Yeah. Yeah. . I'm like, I've been there and I'm like, I had that. Plus the student loans. and I think so many people are out there doing that. And as we figure out, okay, we no longer wanna be strapped by the glass ceiling of working for someone else. This show we all, we are almost all entrepreneurs that I have as listeners.
I think that we come up against that, those shame, that confusion and the fear of the lack of conversation. . Yes. And I think it's important to talk about the fear too, because and I'm in my own expansion journey at this very moment, and fear isn't real. Fear is something that we make up in our mind, and so we can have fear of what's gonna happen in the future.
Fear that we won't get that next client or fear that our company won't grow to that first milestone, call it six figures, if you will, and. When we're living in that state of fear, we are contracting inside and when we're there that's a low vibration emotion. And so it inhibits our ability to be creative and to be open and to support each other and to support ourselves.
And so I like to think about money as really this is a conversation about love. This is really a conversation about self-care. And if you are willing to just look at your. , that's where the transformation begins. And I always say that abundance is our natural state. Like you get a cut and it heals and you don't even have to do anything, and you don't even have to breathe on your own.
Your body will do it for you. We have all the food and water and air that we need truly right here and right now. And so money is just an energy. . And so when we can plug into what is inside of us and really come back to what are those self-care practices, how do we support our mental, emotional, and physical state, that puts us in a better position to run our company or create a great team or have a great conversation with your team or have a an amazing offering that comes out that's from your heart.
And income follows impact. So if we take care of our whole self, then the income will follow. So really wealth is an inside job. It's nothing external. It's not this hustle culture let's wear the badge of honor if we work 75 hour weeks because we want that number. It's really taking care of self and that is not it.
Yes. And I was a part of that hustle culture for sure when I was younger. Again, because I come from a family of entrepreneurs and real estate investors, and so I always wanted to be successful. And I say that with quotation marks around it because it's like, what does successful even mean? I didn't even know what success meant to me.
I was just doing what everybody told me to do. And it wasn't until I was, again, I was, here I am in my mid twenties. I've got the house, the car, the job, the lifestyle. And I started to have major financial stress, like major. It was like I always had more month than money and I realized, wow, I think I have, I think my credit card debt is growing.
How much do I really have? And I had been doing mental accounting, so I really wasn't aware. Yeah, I had an idea, but I wasn't truly aware of my money in and my money out. And it wasn't until we had three back to back snowstorms in Colorado where I. And my office was 48 miles from my house. I drove a Honda Accord.
I felt like it was a risk for me to go to work that day. I called my boss and she said, well, if you don't come in, you're fired. And I thought, gosh, I'm gonna risk my life to go to my job to pay my bills so I can be successful. and I'm not even happy and I'm working 16 and 70 hours a week and it's a thankless job.
And I just started to think about it. I'm like, I'm not successful. I'm not successful at all. This is not the life that I wanted to, that I dreamed about when I was trying to get straight A's in school, and a perfect score on the s a t. Like, no, no, thank you. Like if this is it, I give it all back. And so I did end up making to it to work that day and home safely.
I was like, I'm gonna get out my credit card statements and add up my balances. And that's when I discovered that I had the $67,000 of credit card debt. And I thought, well, surely my financial advisor can help me. So again, this is many years ago, almost 20 years ago now, called my financial advisor first thing the next morning, and he listens and then he asked me.
Okay. , how much more money do you want to invest each month? And I'm just like, I don't have any money to invest. Like that's, this is why I'm calling you. And that was when I realized there was a huge disconnect between what a financial advisor does, helping you invest money that you already have. And a financial coach like myself today, because I'm a pioneer financial coach in the United States, there were no financial coaches when I started doing.
and what I do is I help people create more money to invest. And whether that's through your career professional, or you're an entrepreneur and you're, you've got your own business, you're starting a business, you're scaling a business, and how do we put your little dollars to work so that you can create personal wealth and one day financial independence, which is the point when work becomes a choice.
And so I just created a little system. Everything I had learned, studying business in college, working in real. working in corporate finance like you did Jen. And you know what I learned from my parents. And then of course I read a ton of books about passive income and debt elimination and wealth management and personal finance.
And I created a system, applied it to my personal finances, three years later, totally debt free shortly after that, money in the bank. And I just kept going and I'm still doing the same thing.
Without the overwhelm of having to get to work in a snowstorm in a car that you're not sure. . That's true freedom. Yes. Oh my God. I have to sometimes I have to pinch myself because I've been an entrepreneur now since 2016, is like my dream was always to work for myself. I'm like, how can I create enough money that I can live the lifestyle that I wanna live and work for myself doing what I'm passionate.
and like that was the big dream for me. And I did it it was a lot of hard work and hiring coaches and acquiring skills and all the things but today I don't have to wake up with an alarm clock and I don't have to ask to go to the bathroom, and I don't have to call in if I don't feel well.
And I get to create my own boundaries around my time and who I work with. And it's wonderful. It truly is a gift and I'm very thankful for. . Yeah, that's, I mean I think that's the dream that we all work for. And I love how your approach is so different than what we see, like all over social media because what I'm feeling from like the, our conversation and the emotion behind it is true wealth versus the numbers that we see people.
trying to strive for, regardless of the emotional impact behind it. And it seems like you've really created this. I know that you've written a book about it, so we gotta talk about your book and your powerful statement of, what did you wanna call this episode? Wealth is for everyone. I think we need to, from your point of view, what is wealth?
Yeah. Wealth is a combination of health and abundance of. To live the lifestyle that you wanna live. Cuz we all have a different lifestyle that fulfills us and happiness. And it's really the trifecta. It's a combination of those three things to me is what true wealth is. It's not a function of money.
Although money is important, like we all live in this world, we all run businesses. At some. Money is a component of the business. Like we're trading our value for money. And that's important because it en money enables us to trade in all of the different ways that we want. And that's really a beautiful thing.
It's actually an amazing system that we've created this money system. But when you really get clear on. Lights you up in life? Like what are your core values? What makes you happy and fulfilled? It might not be an abundance of money, it might just be, it might be health. Like I lost my health. I was only 20 years old.
I was diagnosed with a chronic illness and I couldn't walk on and off for four years. I was handicapped, legally handicapped, and it changed my life and all I wanted. All I wanted was to be able to attend a full day of classes in college that was wealth to me. And so I think really getting clear on what lights you up in life and going toward that and taking care again of your physical, emotional and physical self is how we are able to create the money that we need to support the lifestyle that we desire to live.
Oh. And that approach to money feels so, I mean, it lights me up. It makes me want instead of that fear or shame. . I mean, I forget who I was talk I saw, I read it online somewhere. It was like, it's like a relationship you don't wanna have if you have a friend that you're not yourself around, that you're constantly trying to be like, or trying to get to a certain level they don't wanna hang out with.
You just kind of wanna have it as that energetic exchange. And I love that. That's what you're calling it is it's an energy. And I wanna know, you mentioned something a little bit about. Our money system and how it's beautiful. I wanna know from your point of view, because I've never heard that before and I'm always like, Ugh, our money system sucks
we're in this time where you look online and it's like we're in this great, whatever you wanna call it. I've seen it many different ways. I don't believe it, but , I wanna know a little bit about the money system from your point of view, just because you're making. Feel good. And when things feel good, that's when flow comes.
Yes, yes. And gosh, Jen, I could talk for, on and on and on about the system that we're living in and all the the power structures and where power lies and lives in the world and, and that, that gets me down. I will be honest if there's anything that kind of brings my emotional vibration down it's really looking deeply into where the pi power lies globally in businesses and governments, et cetera.
But when we get down to it and you start to look at how far we've. as a humanity. Mm-hmm. and how much we have expanded and grown for the positive and how how more people have access to resources and education and healthcare. That's really a beautiful thing. And so looking at money from more of a a humanitarian perspective or resource perspective, we really have improved over the, let's call them the centuries.
As far as our money system goes, I, I. Appreciate. that you can work in exchange for money. And it's something that's agreed upon. And I also appreciate that as an entrepreneur, you, there is no ceiling. You get to explore what offerings will bring in the kind of income that you desire, and you get to ask for that.
And the more that we are, investing in ourself and our offering and providing value to people, the more we can ask and people will pay for what they want to pay for, what it is that we're offering. And so there's a market for that and there's a balance there. And so I think if we put all the garbage in the junk that I kind of started out with, that lowers my emotional vibration.
Let's just set that aside for a minute and forget about that cuz we're not gonna solve we're just, we're the little people who are just trying to live life and hopefully enjoy the business that we've created or the life that we've created. And our only work to do, like the true work that we need to do is our own personal healing and self care so that we can be the best leader or provider or mother, partner, friend, c e o, et cetera.
Yeah. And that's where I was getting is that you're looking at the money system as like this energetic exchange, and I love that you put, it's like a contract that we've agreed upon. It's not something we're forced into. Hmm. It's like we've agreed this is the value for this. We've agreed this is the energetic exchange.
And that's why I asked the question is because you started talking about this energetic exchange, and we have this vision because it's shoved down. Throat so much, but your side, like how you are explaining it, it's yeah, I want more of that. That feels good. It feels like a warm hug. . Mm-hmm. , however silly that sounds is and it is that vibration.
And I really appreciate that you're bringing this conversation out into the world because I think that, especially for entrepreneurs, if we can look at it as that energetic exchange that agreed upon. . Mm-hmm. , we can start shifting some of those perspectives and move towards that more li more simple wealth life if we
Yes. Yes. And simplicity is a core value of mine. And I think just through my own health journey and my own wealth journey, it's okay, how did I really eliminate $67,000 of credit card debt in three years when I started from a place where I was living paycheck to pay? and this is where the strategic piece of money comes in, and I always say wealth building is 20% strategy, and the strategy is actually really important and 80% mindset.
And it's that mindset piece that's gonna enable you to make those choices and decisions when you're out in the real world, being tugged on all day long to spend or buy, or be afraid of this or you need that and it. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. None of this is true. What is true for me? And so that's how I began my wealth journey is getting really clear on, I value simplicity.
I value freedom, love, and authenticity. Those are some of my core values. I have a few more cuz leading from values is important for me. And they evolve and they change over time as we change, right? But I started to align. where my money was going with what was of value to me. And so naturally I started spending less money and as I started to filter out all of the noise in the world that is telling us what's right and wrong and what I need and what I should be afraid of, it's like, wait, just because somebody put that in front of me just because someone said that, just because someone put that social media post up, that does not make it true.
This is just one person's perspective. , and yet I have my own. So taking back my power and owning what is true for me, and putting my racehorse blinders on my laser beam focused and saying, I want freedom. I don't want to have to risk my life to go to a job that. . I hate let's be honest, I did not like my job.
And the fact that I was, I'm like, what's the whole point of this game of life? , I was born into this life. Life is the gift, yet I'm gonna throw away the gift to get a paycheck. And the paycheck is really just energy anyway. And what, where am I putting this energy? What am I do? So like I really started to think deeply about money and what it represented for me.
and I started saying no, like friends would invite me, like health, of course we're talking about health a lot, so thank you for the space for me to keep coming back to this. For example, a friend might say, Holly, I wanna spend some time. Let's go get a coffee. And I'm like, well, You know, cuz I had ulcerative colitis.
So it's a gut problem where it's an autoimmune disease where my large intestine was under attack all the time. So coffee not so good for my body. Not to mention I'm spending money and we're in a noisy place. I'm a, what they call an H S P, a highly sensitive person, which I've now learned that 20% of animals and people.
R h s. Okay. Hey, another one in the house. Yeah. But I didn't know that about myself, so you know, instead of saying yes, like that's the easy natural thing to do, it's like yeah, sure, let's go get a coffee. It's at the time, five bucks now a latte's seven. But, , I just started to say, okay what's.
I like quiet. I definitely wanna connect with my friend. Definitely wanna drink something that's gonna make my body feel good. So why don't we pack our Al Jean water bottles and go to the park and have a nice walk instead. Now we're getting some sunshine. We're in nature. We're not spending any money.
So that's five bucks that can, I can now put towards my debt elimination. And so those were the little things that I started to do is I just started like getting rid of expenses that I really. , they weren't bringing back into my life something that was supportive to me and the life that I wanted to live.
And so that was one. And then I quickly realized, wow, I can get to financial independence a lot faster if I add some income. So then I got really excited about like multiple streams of income and so I started working with our Bond, which is a multi-level marketing company or a direct sales company.
And that was really fun. I learned a ton about business and and that was, The first little stream of income that I created, and now I have 11 streams of income, and I teach other people how to create more streams of income, 11 streams of income. That is amazing. Life goals, , and they're not all big. I don't say this to like, toot my horn at all.
And you need to toot, that's why this show's here is to toot our horns. It's okay some produce a lot of income and some don't produce a whole lot. It's like how much energy do I wanna put into them? Because energy in, energy out type of thing. But when one stream of income is down there's another one that I can fall back on.
And that's part of the the wealth planning and the strategy, the strategic piece of wealth building really excites me. And you can hit your wealth from lots of different angles, whichever one feels right for you.
I love that. And with the way that you're describing it and you're ha you're getting some of your life back also, you're getting the lifestyle, that freedom. So that means that you have 11 different streams of income, but you're not having to work 20 of the 24 hours of the day to create this.
Right. Right. I just, I'm like, my brain is obviously I'm processing. Cause I'm like, whoa, I could work less, could have more freedom, more fun. And it sounds like it really, it supported you like with your walk with your friend, it supported your body and your mind and your bank account all at once completely.
And it's like oh, okay. That's the wealth trifecta, right? So I know that in 2021 you wrote a book called Simple Wealth. Yes. A practical Guide to Transform Your Relationship with Money and Live in Abundance. I wanna know what's the juice on the book? Yes. I gotta know all the things. Oh gosh.
I, it was a labor of love. I had an amazing publisher. They actually had a program that I went through as I was writing the book. I wrote the book in nine weeks. and I actually was living in Argentina when I wrote the book. I was like, I'm gonna get outta Colorado where it's cold and go south and have a summer down there while it was winter in Colorado and I.
Again, going back to taking care of my, my, whole body, my, my mental, emotional and physical health. So I really nurtured myself while I was there. And I feel like in a lot of ways, the messages in the book I channeled, it came from somewhere beyond me, something greater than me. And I think the reason that the book has been such a success, and it was on bank rate's, top 10 personal finance books of 2022, is because the book isn't just about the strategy.
It's also about the personal practices that transform you into a wealthy person. And these are the same personal practices that I have used to. expand my wealth. Wealth is a, it's a journey and it's also a spectrum. So wherever you are on your wealth journey whether you've got the student loans or maybe you don't have any debt you really wanna just kick your business into that next level or whatever it is.
Wherever you are on that wealth spectrum, you can always come back to these personal practices, which will be supportive in you creating more money or eliminating the debt. Getting organized, whatever, whatever it is when it comes to money that you're facing right now, because we are all facing, we're all in a different place.
And I think that's really important when it comes to financial coaching, is that I meet my clients exactly where they are and wherever they are is okay. And there is no, again, there's no shame in this money game. It's just about am I willing to look at my money? , am I willing to make just a small change just a small something every day to practice.
Every day is an opportunity to practice becoming wealthy, and then you practice like every single day and then all of a sudden you wake up like I did. I was like, holy crap, I'm debt free. Like I did it. How did I do that? Well, I did it because. I nurtured myself. I had a gratitude practice. I had a giving practice.
I had a self acknowledgement practice before I would lay my head on the pillow at night or at, let's just say after I would lay my head on, on my pillow at night, right before I'm about to fall asleep. I'm acknowledging myself for at least, three to five things that I did well, not just with my money, but if I made a healthy choice, if I held the door for someone who needed it or whatever, because that's,
That's what helps you expand into that wealthy person who knows their worth. That's an another important piece of this conversation, is knowing that you are the best at what you do. there's a reason that you started this business and you are good at it, you know? And reconnecting with that passion and all the things that you did to get to where you are and start to feel good about that's magnetic.
That resonates with people. And when you put your offering out from the heart, truly from your. . People are gonna feel that. And they're gonna want that. They're gonna want, they're gonna want that cuz it feels good. And so it's a beautiful circular process of just coming back home to taking care of yourself, which means you're gonna take better care of people and it does become simple.
Wow. Yeah. I'm like, , I, I've struggled with this show for a while, so cuz it's called Feed Your Business with Love and this is, this conversation, like what you just said is something that I've been trying to figure out how to put to words for the last two and a half years of this show. Is it does, everything comes back full circle to self then it's that cycle of feeding out to everyone else.
And I, I'm like, , simple wealth. Everyone truly can be wealthy. If we take the time to push through that fear and go back in and say, yeah, okay, I'm working the 60 hour weeks and I'm barely making it, what if I paused and put five hours of that, an hour of that into self-care? Yeah. Or what if when you're at work and you're There's also a thing where, and I did this for me to create my very first little company a little stream of.
I had my full-time job and was like when I'm at my full-time job, can I be a hundred percent productive at my full-time job but still find hours during the day during the workday to devote to my next stream of income? And I did that. And so that was one thing is like creating another stream of income while you're already at the full-time job that's paying your bills.
That's really important cuz like don't just quit your job and, excuse me, go start your own thing. Let's build a bridge, but. That, that creating the bridge to your second stream of income while you're at the first job is how can we build in moments of joy or self-care during that, like for me, that job that was like, oh my god, in the car.
Can I do some breathing on my way to work? Or can I like take instead of five minutes to go to the bathroom, can I take 10 and just stand, stand in in the stall and maybe. Power pose or something so that I'm being supportive to myself during the workday so that I don't get home and I'm depleted.
Yeah. I think that another thing that you kind of just mentioned in a roundabout way is that it's okay to have the nine to five. There's so much information out there of don't do it. Don't do it. Some people love their normal jobs. But having the ability, like you said, to find another way to have a stream.
Cuz even, I personally don't wanna put all my eggs in one basket cuz things can be taken away. We just don't know. Right. We don't know. And things will be taken away. That's the thing is if there's an acceptance. things will be taken away. Things will go away. The economy's gonna change.
Nobody's gonna want Instagram, they're gonna want TikTok or whatever. Like the only thing that is certain is change. And so if we're willing to build up the number one thing that we have in our life, which is ourself, not just our physical self, but we have an emotional world and we also have a mental world, and when we can When we can manage all that is in our head, and let's be honest, today, we all are, we are all carrying a lot in our brains because we are just bombarded with so much information.
And so a big part of the, let's call it the game of life, is how can we manage what's in our head, drop into our heart and feed, feed our soul? And I. That when we can find fulfillment within us, regardless of what changes or what gets taken away or what, like we can break our arm tomorrow, like that can happen and, but we still have ourself, we still can find a happy, peaceful place within.
And I always think about there was a scene in a movie, and again, because I'm sensitive. T television really affects me. So I've actually, one of, one of my personal practices for 2023 has been to watch less tv, but there was a scene in a show where this person lost their arms and their legs and eventually their tongue and oh gosh, I can't even tell you how much that traumatized me that scene and.
